One of the thousand names of Viṣṇu (Vishnu). According to dictionaries agra means ‘the upper part’ or the first part’. At the same time, the word is also used to convey a sense of excellence. When the verbal root nī (ni) if first added to the word agra, and then further joined with the inflection –kvip (kwip), the complete word reads as agraṇī. The meaning of the verbal root nī is ‘to lead’. God Viṣṇu’s disciples, desirous of or salvation, are led to a higher plane or higher realm by virtue of his grace. That is why Viṣṇu is renowned as Agraṇī—
agraṃ prakṛṣṭaṃ padaṃ nayati mumukṣūniti agraṇīḥ.
