Umāvana (Umavana) is a forest situated in the Himālaya (Himalaya) Parvata region. In this forest, Mahādeva (Mahadeva) manifested himself as the androgynous God-

Tatraivomāvanaṃ nāma sarvalokeṣu viśutaṃ.
Ardhanārīnaṃ rūpaṃ dhritavān yatra Śaṁkaraḥ.

While discussing about Umāvana (Umavana) in the Purāṇa (Purana), it was told that when Devī Bhagavatī (Devi Bhagavati) devoted herself in a strict meditation to get Mahādeva (Mahadeva) as her husband, she created a rule in Umāvana (Umavana) that whenever a man entered in this forest, he would be turned into a beautiful Apsarā (Apsara) or divine woman. Even this rule was applicable to the animals and the demons. Once the king Sudyumna entered this forest and was transformed as Ilā Devī (Ila devi).

The scholars think that Kotālgāda (Kotalgada) and Fort Hastings within the district of Lāhula (Lahula) in the Kumāyuna Himālaya (Kumayuna Himalaya) indicate the present location of Umāvana (Umavana).
